Designed to run only on Windows 8 RTM* with x64 or x86 architecture, the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8 has gone RTM! Existing beta, RC or older versions of RSAT must be removed beforehand and the RTM version separately installed if you performed an OS upgrade from Windows 7 (to Windows 8).

The RSAT for Windows 8 (”adminpak.msi for Windows 8″) can be used to remotely manage the following versions of Windows Server. Depending on the latter and Windows installation options, not all the tools in the admin pack work for managing roles and features for a specific Windows setup and configuration.

• Windows Server 2012 (”Windows Server 8″)
  - Full graphical installation option
  - Server Core installation option
  - Minimal Server Graphical Interface
• Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008
  - Full graphical installation option
  - Server Core installation option

PowerShell 3.0 with Windows Remote Management (WinRM) and Windows Management Instrumention (WMI), packaged as Windows Management Framework 3.0, has gone RTM (download link) and is targeted at pre Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 client on supported down-level operating systems:

• Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 (32-bit & 64-bit)
• Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 and Server Core (SP1 64-bit only)
  - install PowerShell 2.0 Integrated Scripting Environment before setting up Windows PowerShell 3.0 (if ISE for PowerShell 3.0 is needed)
• Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (32-bit & 64-bit)

The prerequisites Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0* (download web, full standalone installer*) must be fulfilled beforehand otherwise an error message is expected.

Note that new Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8 specific cmdlets / modules are not part of Windows Management Framework 3.0 (PowerShell v3) for downlevel clients e.g. Get-Disk, Get-NetAdapter.

The official launch event of Windows Server 2012 RTM (or GA) “Built from the Cloud Up” started just moments ago today Tue 4 Sep 2012 where you can still participate virtually with any HTML5 compatible browser. Along with it, the final Windows Server 2012 RTM media bits (Standard/Datacenter editions) are download ready for Volume License/ Software Assurance, TechNet and MSDN subscribers.

Unless you choose to download and deploy the 180 day evaluation or trial version* in ISO or VHDx format (link), running the Windows Server 2012 RTM setup from other licensed media necessitates the input of a valid product key. There is also no installation option to un/check the previously available user option to “Activate the product automatically”.

Having looked at how to retrieve TCP IPv4 and IPv6 network information (the ‘getters’ in programming parlance), it is now time to turn our attention to edit basic network related settings with PowerShell v3. This can be realized in Windows Server 2012 (Server core or GUI), Windows 8 but not supported in down-level Windows versions (even with Windows Management Framework 3.0).

Prior to making any networking changes on the command line (or PowerShell IDE), ensure that all TCP/IP property dialog boxes are closed otherwise an error is almost certain to result:
