Although the “Prepare first Standard Edition Server” step is pretty straightforward, a little bit of background information is in order to help explain the purpose of this task.

Except for certain user settings that continue to be stored in Active Directory Directory Services (AD DS), the majority of Lync configuration settings are now stored in the Central Management Store, CMS. The Central Management Server, a new component service, manages the CMS which also houses Lync topology and policy information at the various scope levels (global, site, service/pool, tag/user).

The PowerShell module in the Lync Server Management Shell (2010 RTM) no longer goes by the name OCS . Instead, the name has been harmonized with the rest of the product family i.e.

To celebrate the official launch today, I am going to start off a step by step instructional tutorial series* on how to setup, install, configure and deploy a core on-premise Lync Server 2010 infrastructure with the final RTM bits. The most important initial step is to understand the prerequisites (minimum requirements) of the environment.
