Lync Server 2010: Cumulative Update 2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Support (Apr 2011)

Cumulative update #2 (CU2) for Lync Server 2010 has been released as described in KB2493736. CU2 comprises of updates for the Lync core components, various server roles, administrative tools and runtime engines. For consolidated Lync server roles (Standard/Enterprise Editions), all updates must also be at the latest update level.

There are 3 recommended installation methods to deploy the Lync CU2 update for Standard/Enterprise editions (download link for update files here):
- Method 1 Cumulative Server Update Installer
- Method 2 Microsoft Update (available only mid May 2011)
- Method 3 Manual installation

If you have automated your infrastructure with applications/tools such as System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) or deployed private cloud environments, this continues to be the best hands-free deployment option. Otherwise, consider using method 1 “Cumulative Server Update Installer” as it will automatically apply all updates for the appropriate server role in a single click.

In case you missed it, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (Service Pack 1) is officially supported with Lync Server 2010.  A related KB2522454 article is available which you should consult prior to rolling out SP1 on new or existing Lync installations.

Lync Server 2010: SQL Server 2008 R2 Support is Here!

With the completion of testing SQL Server 2008 R2 with Lync Server 2010 by the Lync Server product team, this deployment scenario is now officially supported on all Lync Server Front-End, monitoring and archiving databases.

The only exception is the use of SQL Server 2008 R2 for Group Chat databases which currently remains unsupported. Note that only the 64-bit (x64) versions of SQL Server Standard or Enterprise Editions in the backend - SQL Server 2005 SP3, 2008 SP1 and 2008 R2 or higher - are supported.
