Windows Server 2008 as Workstation - What Doesn’t Work
Jun 2nd 2008Desmond LeeWindows Server 200x/ 2008/ Server Core/ R2
Per blog post title, here is a complied list of applications under Windows Server 2008* summarized from different sources. The applications either fail setup or install successfully but do not work at all (or not as expected) out-of-the-box. The common setup error is related to the OS being a server edition as this usually means different product category / licensing scheme apply.
It is likely that updated patches or version upgrades should address known issues on WS08; contact the respective vendor to find out more. Perhaps some registry hacks or security rights/permissions adjustments may help too (not tested).
More: In order for Windows to correctly recognize and support your hardware devices, it is wise to check the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) and ensure that platform specific drivers are available (particularly x64).
- AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
- WinZip 9.0SR1 b6224 (lack of Windows Explorer integration in WS08 x64)
- Windows Live Messenger Download (XP x64 not supported = same for WS08 x64; WLinstaller.exe ~2.28MB for LM 8.5. One workaround is to download older 7.x version but login to IM failed because newer 8.x version is required)
- Windows Media Player Firefox Plug-In (setup error: Package does not support server OS WS08 x64, even if Vista x64 is listed as a supported platform)
- Java 2 runtime 1.6.0_05 (ver 6 update 5; browser applet hangs Firefox 2.0.0.14; run test to verify)
- Adobe Acrobat 7.0.3 Pro (unable to create PDF printer hence cannot print to PDF from applications such as Word)
- VMware Workstation 6.0.3 (only experimental support for WS08 since 6.0.1 and still the case with 6.0.4; guest OS setup may hang)
- Aventail SSL VPN Client 5.3.4 and Web Components (both on WS08 x64)
- Software 995 PDF suite (same issue as Adobe Acrobat)
- TomTom Home 2.3 (fails to recognize attached device or download maps with Ctrl-F8)
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Certificate Services (cannot do web enroll for certificate on WS08 x64)
- TechSmith SnagIt 7.x (installed fine but crashed after login)
- Skype 3.6.0.248 (installed fine but crashed after login)
[ Updates ]
- Officelabs Community Clips v1.0.1625.0 (installed fine but crashed when started on WS08 x64)
* x86 and x64 editions, with and without Hyper-V
