Fix for Hyper-V Virtual Machine Start Error
Jun 5th 2008Desmond LeeVirtual Server/ PC/ Hyper-V R2/ Windows 7 XP Mode
Unlike Virtual PC or Virtual Server, Hyper-V continues to maintain a list of registered virtual machines within the Hyper-V Manager console. Provided that the VM settings themselves are accessible, this applies to virtual machines regardless of where the actual virtual hard disks (.vhd) are stored.
If the virtual hard disk for a virtual machine cannot be found, the following error message will be returned when an attempt is made to start or restore the VM. The fix is easy - ensure that the .vhd is not corrupted and accessible (from storage device directly or via the network).
